Restore Your Gut Health with This Simple, Yet Healing Broth Recipe

Tummy troubles are no fun. Producing symptoms that range from indigestion to aches and pains, to feeling as though you’ve swallowed a jar full of butterflies, gut health problems can result in a myriad of side effects, while also impairing your immunity and even depressing your mood. Gut health isn’t just a wellness buzzword – it’s something everyone should take seriously.

If your gut is all out of sorts, due to pandemic-related stress, workplace anxiety, or some other reason, try making a batch of this gut-healing broth, taken from the pages of Gemma Ogston’s The Self-Care Cookbook: Easy Healing Plant-Based Recipes. All you have to do is blend a variety of natural veggies, herbs, and other nutrient-dense foods with water and enjoy as a broth or drink.

Ingredients:

• 1 small onion, quartered
• 1 garlic head, smashed
• 1 fresh chile, chopped
• One 2-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
• 3½ cups greens (such as kale)
• 2 large carrots
• 2 celery stalks
• 1¾ ounces dried mushrooms (optional)
• 1¾ ounces dried seaweed (optional)
• 1 tablespoon coconut or olive oil
• 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
• 2 tablespoons ground turmeric
• 1 tablespoon tamari
• 1 tablespoon raw apple cider vinegar
• 1 tablespoon miso paste
• One bunch of fresh cilantro, chopped
• 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (optional)
• One bunch of fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions:

1. In a large pot, combine everything except the parsley with 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then decrease the heat and simmer, with the lid on, for about 1 hour.

2. Strain the liquid through a mesh strainer into a large bowl. Serve immediately topped with fresh parsley, or cool and store for later. You can also add noodles or raw veggies to this, or drink it plain.
